Believe it or not, it’s been seven years since Taylor Swift made her debut at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, and the country-gone-pop singer has undergone quite the transformation during this time. In fact, many of her defining moments have taken place at the VMAs.
Taylor is nominated for Video of the Year at the 2015 show, which is just one of her nine nominations. Taylor has won Best Female Video in 2009 and 2013, but has yet to grab the night’s biggest prize of VOTY. Will it happen this year?
While we await the 2015 show — airing live on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 9e/6p on MTV — let’s look back at Taylor’s history at the VMAs.
Welcome to Taylor’s first VMAs! She took the red carpet at the 2008 VMAs in a cute, lavender Kaufman Franco dress that defined her style back then.
She introduced The Jonas Brothers, who performed “Lovebug.” Taylor was dating Joe Jonas at the time, and even today they remain friends.
She returned the next year, this time rolling into the 2009 VMAs in a Cinderella horse carriage. Taylor does nothing little — even six years ago.
She wore a long gown by Kaufman Franco that was littered with jewels all the way to the floor.
When Beyonce won the award for Video of the Year for “Single Ladies,” she allowed Taylor to finish her speech.
Taylor came back the next year with a song supposedly pointed at Kanye West. She sang theSpeak Now track “Innocent” barefoot onstage, looking as vulnerable as ever. She later told New York mag, “I think a lot of people expected me to write a song about [West], but, for me, it was important to write a song to him.”
After skipping the 2011 awards, where she was nominated for Best Video With A Message for “Mean,” Taylor showed up at the 2012 VMAs with straightened hair and a new look, which included a white J. Mendel silk crepe pantsuit.
Taylor wore a long, blue Hervé Léger by Max Azria gown to the 2013 show. Here she is posing with Ashanti!
Swift wore a Mary Katrantzou bodysuit to the 2014 show. Look at her commanding the carpet like that!
The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from L.A.’s Microsoft Theater at 9e/6p, on Sunday, August 30.
