When you’re done yelling “F–K YEAH” after Miley Cyrus’ epic performance of her new song “Dooo It!” you might be asking yourself: “Who are those other people up on stage with her? No, not all the folks in Day-Glo… The dudes! The dude in the grey suit with the hair and whatever?”
Well, lemme throw a little music history at you — that’s Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips, one of the raddest, trippiest bands of all time… and some of Miley’s best friends and collaborators.
Before you start tearing through Miley’s newly dropped record, Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz (I can’t wait either), let’s take a look back at how Miley met the dude who made this album possible:
January 2014: Birthdazzze
happy birthday to one of my favorite artists OF alllllll time @waynecoyne 🔥👄🎉🎈🌀🌈
— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) January 13, 2014
Miley expressed her admiration for Wayne via a birthdaze tweet, like any fan is wont to do.
February 2014: Bangers And Mashups
Miley bro’d-out with Wayne when the frontman sang “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots” with Cyrus a few times on tour, with your girl dressed as a hot dog at one point.
March 2014: No New Fwends?
Miley and Wayne appear to have forged their new friendship during the Bangerz tour, when Coyne shared a photo of Cyrus rolling a joint with a caption announcing that the two were recording together. Sadly, this image has been lost, as Coyne’s Instagram account has been flagged and killed myriad times. Wayne also shared another photo (also RIP) in which he said Miley was recording a cover of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.”
The Flaming Lips were on a total Beatles kick for a minute there, which later led to his collaboration covers album, With A Little Help From My Fwends, also featuring Miley.
May 2014: Climbing The Charts
The crew performed “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” at the Billboard Music Awards. No one is ready for that jelly — which they don’t use.
July 2014: Getting Inked
After Miley’s beloved dog Floyd died (now you understand why her new record is called Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz), Cyrus, Wayne and Wayne’s girlfriend Katy Weaver got matching memorial tattoos reading “With A Little Help From My Fwends.” Casual.
July 2014: Moby Makes A Cameo
And then this happened while Miley was suffering from a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics. When I’m sick, I cuddle my cat — when Miley’s sick, she cuddles a human brain in a highly NSFW video. Oh, and Moby was there, too.
September 2014: Miley Has Two Dads
Lest you get any fancy ideas about Miley and Wayne, Cyrus posted a massively supportive text from her dad on Instagram with the caption, “I love my dad @billyraycyrus 💖💖💖 I think that’s why I love @waynecoyne5 he has so many of the same philosophy’s as my dada who is the most magical hillbilly wizard of all time.”
Get your mind outta the gutter and look at the stars. Or something.
October 2014: More Ink
With a Little Help From My Fwends dropped — and everyone got tatted to celebrate, presumably.
Months Of Pal’ing
— Wayne Coyne (@waynecoyne) January 21, 2015
Sometimes friends just chill, you know?
March 2015: New Tunes?
Miley shared an Instagram video from the studio and tagged Wayne and fwends. We commenced freaking out.
May 2015: New Tunes
Miley premiered a new tune with the Flaming Lips titled “Tiger Dreams” at an Adult Swim party in New York. It’s trippy and amazing.
August 2015: A New Record Is Definitely On The Way
We heard wind that Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz — aka Miley and the Lips — were prepping a new record, one that would possibly come out for free. “It’s not a Miley record,” the source told Billboard. “It’s a project she’s been working on with the Flaming Lips. It’s amazing, it’s incredible, it just needs to be understood that it’s not a typical, straightforward Miley record — we don’t want there to be confusion in the marketplace.”
Um, sounds like a Miley record to us.
RIGHT NOW: THE RECORD IS HERE
