Nick Jonas is the latest performer to be confirmed for the 2016 MTV VMAs, taking place for the first time at New York’s Madison Square Gardens on Sunday, August 28.
Yesterday, MTV released a time capsule announcement chronicling past music videos and VMA performances by Britney Spears, who is set to perform with G-Eazy. Today’s performer announcement features an abstract art video with Jonas narrating, explaining what art and creativity mean to him.
“For me, creativity is the backbone behind everything I do. It’s about seeing the world in a new and imaginative way,” says Jonas. “There are so few things left in this world that you can actually make. It’s important to keep in mind the impact of all forms of art. Music is the universal language. Keep sharing.”
The announcement’s stunning visuals were created by Texas native Hayden Zezula, who Jonas credits as one of his favourite artists.
Jonas won’t be hitting the VMA stage alone. Ty Dolla $ign is set to join the singer for his performance, leading to the assumption that the pair will perform their Last Year Was Complicated track “Bacon.”
The former Jonas Brothers member released his highly anticipated third studio album Last Year Was Complicated in June, which spawned the huge single “Close” featuring Tove Lo. Jonas has documented the recording and release of the album in a docu-series for TIDAL and has been releasing episodes on a bi-weekly basis. The singer is currently on tour with Demi Lovato for the Future Now Tour.
Here at Much we know for a fact that Jonas can rule any stage he steps on. The multi-talented performer has hosted and performed three times at the iHeartRadio MMVAs, stealing the show with each appearance. His rendition of “Close” this past June featured Jonas performing in the crowd outside 299 Queen Street West, a feat that had never before been attempted by any performer. And it was awesome.
Ty Dolla $ign and Jonas are the third acts announced for this year’s VMAs. Britney Spears will reportedly perform her new single, “Make Me,” along with rapper G-Eazy. Rihanna, the first performer announced for the annual show, will also be accepting this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award—an honour Spears previously received in 2011.
The 2016 MTV VMAs, featuring performances from Nick Jonas and Ty Dolla $ign, Rihanna, Britney Spears and G Eazy, will air Sunday, August 28 at 9E/6P on MTV.
