This time last year, Fetty Wap was building his buzz, uploading songs to his SoundCloud one-by-one. But it was one particular song that was uploaded in March, which set everything off and made the Paterson, New Jersey hip-hop rookie a two-time nominee at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, which will air live from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater at 9 p.m. ET, on Sunday, August 30.

Fetty’s noms in the Best Hip Hop Video and Artist To Watch categories is a win, regardless of whether or not his name is announced when the envelopes are opened on August 30. Because, let’s face it — this guy has been slowly stacking wins since the ball dropped in January.

If you’ve been under a rock this whole time, here’s how Fetty Wap got here.

“Trap Queen”

The song was catchy on its own, but with the VMA-nominated video Fetty shows us a different kind of love, where he and his baby count money and cook apple pies together.

The Kanye Co-Sign

We believe Fetty would still be on top even if Kanye didn’t bring him on for his Roc City Classic concert in February, but standing close to Mr. West certainly doesn’t hurt things.

I mean, Jay Z and Beyoncé seemed to enjoy Fetty’s performance; here’s video of them bopping to “Trap Queen.”

The Rihanna Shout-Out

Drake Jumps On “My Way”

If Drake doesn’t remix your song, is your song really a song? OK, maybe that’s a bit much, but Drizzy’s “My Way” remix definitely opened Zoovier up to a bigger audience.

“679”

Once hip-hop fans got a taste of Fetty, we couldn’t get enough. He dropped his “679” video with the Remy Boyz in May. In less than three months, the clip already has almost 16 million views.

The 2015 XXL Freshman Cover

Wap’s stock continued to rise at the beginning of June when it was revealed that he would appear front and center on the cover of XXL’s annual freshman issue.

Closing out the BET Awards is a very big deal.

His First Award Win

Fetty got emotional during when he won his first award, thanks to Music Choice back in June. If he wins at the VMAs who knows how he’ll react.
